Shoes, banknotes and other surfaces could soon be able to clean themselves and prevent the build-up of bacteria thanks to a new natural seaweed compound.
Unilever and Innova Partnerships are working on a product made from the organic compound Lactam, which can block bacteria and mould on everyday surfaces.
The chemical giant says the new patented technology has been in development for over a decade, including work studying natural chemicals in seaweed.
It has a range of potential uses including preventing fungal growth in washing machines, self cleaning banknotes and even in the medical field, Unilever says.
The company makes Cif and Domestos, although they haven t said whether the technology will be included in existing products or will be a new product.
Wirral Council has itself declared a climate change emergency. However, the council is still pursuing the creation of a third sea wall on West Kirby promenade, in concrete, that will generate untold of tons of CO2. We are not told how many tons in the
Wirral View article about this “scheme”. Surely this is totally inappropriate in a “climate change emergency” or do I misunderstand the Council’s definition of climate change emergency? Further, to spend £6m of taxpayers’ money generating tons of CO2 would seem disgraceful mis-use of public funds. The damaging effects of COVID and lockdowns together with the established needs of New Ferry, Seacombe, Liscard and Bidston to name a few wards, are far more real needs.

The two men killed when the walls of the building they were working to construct collapsed in London, Ont., left behind young families and a community shocked by the tragedy.
Henry Harder, 26, and John Martens, 21, died Friday when parts of the four-storey building in southwest London suddenly gave way. The accident injured four others.
Harder, from Tillsonburg, Ont., leaves behind a wife he married two years ago and a three-week-old daughter. Pastor John Dyck said the loss is hitting everyone hard.

Two men were killed and four more were injured when a construction site on Teeple Terrace by Wonderland road on Friday. Since then, the two deceased men have been identified as Henry Harder, 26, and John Martens, 21.
Harder, from Tillsonburg, leaves behind a wife and three-week-old daughter and Martens is from Langton, south of Tillsonburg, he leaves behind his parents, his girlfriend and 10 siblings.
There have been a number of crowdfunding campaigns to support Harder and Martens’ families. A GoFundMe campaign started by the East Elgin Concrete Forming, as of Monday, has reached over $82,000 for the families after setting a $25,000 goal.
