Organiser Neil Car said he was thrilled to be hosting the first mardi gras. It s a day to celebrate diversity of race, sexualities and gender identities, in a family-friendly LGBTQI+ event, he said. The biggest thing is we can t do anything without our allies, our friends and our family, this is why it s an event for everyone. Mr Car said he was inspired during the COVID-19 lockdown to kick start the festivities. We knew that events wouldn t be like they used to be, then mardi gras in Sydney went into a stadium, Mr Car said. We thought we should do something up this way.
