tonight we celebrate. tomorrow we go back to work. dana bash is in manchester. christine romans is in the election center digging into who voted and why. peter ham by is in south carolina, the next stop in this grueling presidential primary. let s begin with dana there. romney s two for two. he won iowa, he won new hampshire. this victory wasn t a surprise, not to most. he was expected to win. it s the size of his win that s really grabbing attention, however. is it enough to get the party to finally rally behind him? reporter: well, fred, that s probably not going to happen immediately because as you mentioned, all of these other candidates are still in the race. effectively, look, this was no question a huge win for mitt romney. you said certainly he was expected to win here because he was governor of a neighboring state, but the size of his win in terms of the overall number, but also the kind of voter that he got, namely the conservative voters in this state. there
year 56 million. the campaign says it has $19 million cash on hand. a big chunk of which will be spent right here, south carolina. site of the first southern primary a week from saturday. today romney and the other candidates intent of stopping him are tearing up the other highways. he says he is the guy that republicans are looking for. i don t believe any moderate can debate romney successfully and i believe if you re going to defeat barack obama, you are only going to defeat him with a conservative and that requires south carolyn generals to come together. a lot can change in ten days. but gingrich is shown with only half of the support that romney has and compared to last month, romney has almost doubled his support and gingrich has lost have of his. this morning on cnn, sticking it to president obama. i have a long way to go before i get the nomination. if i m lucky enough to get it. but i really think we re best off focussing on the failure of the president and pe
he had an event in salem, new hampshire last night, and he was trying to say once again that mitt romney is a massachusetts moderate. take a listen. and i would argue that a conservative is vastly better than a moderate. in campaigning in an environment like this. because by definition, the gap between barack obama and a conservative is vastly wider, and that ultimately you get to october, if he s going to raise $1 billion, and he s going to have to run a scorched-earth campaign, because he won t be able to get himself re-elected. he ll have to try to destroy the republican. and i would argue that if you have a big gap between the two of you, most of his attack will fall in the middle. reporter: gary, we ve got a doubleheader of debates, one tonight, one tomorrow. newt gingrich has done very well in the debates in the fall. he s hoping for a strong performance. rick santorum, the former senator from pennsylvania, he s now almost a front-runner.
republican field, not too impressed. reporter: mitt romney from neighboring massachusetts consistently maintain add 2-1 lead over his closest opponents. a clear front-runner in the granite state, but smith says it s not a warm embrace. romney, well, may not like it too much, but probably the guy with the best chance. that s the kind of idea going on as well. reporter: former senator rick santorum is getting a second look after his near victory in iowa, and newt gingrich is attacking the front-runner, who cost him his fortunes in iowa. i think it s dangerous to make predictions in new hampshire. i really do, and i think you have to wait until the last possible minute. reporter: dan lothian, cnn, manchester, new hampshire. and don t forget, cnn s live coverage of new hampshire primary begins in this very studio tuesday night, 7:00 eastern time. it s a rare look at one man s journey around the world. more than 6,000 pictures taken over 300 daysened condensed in
13%. i m joined by mark murray. good morning. good morning, alex. is mitt romney unstoppable in new hampshire? is it a done deal? it certainly looks that way. mitt romney owns a home in new hampshire. he was the former governor of neighboring massachusetts. and he launched his presidential campaign in new hampshire always knowing that new hampshire is going to be an important state for him to run up a big margin there to protect himself if he lost the iowa caucuses or upcoming primary. what is the big story line? is it romney s potential victory or is it other candidates performances and the expectations of them? given mitt romney s 20-point lead in new hampshire, it s really the battle for second place. we re seeing ron paul at second place and rick santorum at 13%.
