Hindsight 2020: The tech promise comes through, but with hiccups

In Hindsight 2020, we look at how Covid-19 has rendered this a dystopian year. In June, a video of Veveonah Mosibin (pic) sitting for her exam on a treetop went viral in not just Malaysia, but even overseas. The 18-year-old student from Kampung Sapatalang in Pitas, Sabah, did not climb up the langsat tree for a better view or because she wanted to have fun. She needed the elevation to get a better Internet connection so that she could sit for an online examination. As the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc all around the world, the Internet became even more important in people’s lives than ever before.

MCMC targets 1 2 million premises, homes with fibre connectivity under Jendela by 2021

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 28): The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) targets 1.2 million premises and homes with fibre connectivity by 2021 under Jalinan Digital Negara (Jendela), the national digital infrastructure plan. Its chairman Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek said the agency would aggressively work on the target to drive Malaysia towards better digital connectivity. It will take time, we will continue to drive the industry to make sure the delivery of the infrastructure is as per targetted, he said while being a guest on The Nation  talk show broadcast by Bernama TV here today. In August, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, announced that the Jendela action plan, which is part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2025), would lay the foundation for comprehensive and high-quality broadband coverage as well as prepare the country for the transition to fifth-generation network (5G) technology.
