up to 200 miles per hour. one of them estimated to have been nearly a mile wide as it bore down on the tiny town of pilger. we started hearing everything rip apart and the rain and the house ripping apart. yeah, pilger is in major destruction right now. reporter: by the time it was over, three-quarters of the town was damaged or destroyed. many residents were stunned to be survivors. one man describing the frantic search for his friend. we thought he was gone for a long time. we kept yelling at him. then we dug him out. pulled the wood off him, pulled the bricks off him. and drug him out. and the three of us, somehow, we re all fine. it killed my dog. reporter: the entire town of pilger, all 387 residents, evacuated for the night. nebraska s governor dave heinemann ordering a state of emergency, deploying the national guard to assist with
i have never seen anything like this. reporter: the national weather service called it a particularly dangerous situation, the tornados inflicting heavy damage on the town of pilger, about 100 miles northwest of omaha, nebraska, destroying homes. the shingles started blowing through my yard. i watched my hot tub slide and then everything lifted off of us and the heater smashed over me and my buddy. there were a couple houses on this side of the street. across the street there were three houses which are gone. there were three houses on the opposite side of the block that are gone. reporter: another storm system barreled through south dakota with heavy rains and wind up to 80 miles per hour. and hail as large as a half dollar. a weekend of rain swelled the rock river in iowa, sending a rush of water through the town of rock rapid. and rain and floodwaters severely damaging a golf course in sioux city, iowa. most of the greens under water. not going to be open to day,
