ceiling, we cannot have anything attached to a debt ceiling. he s just admitted that s not going to be the case because they won t allow it and we ve already seen the senate agree with kevin mccarthy s plans that, yes, there will be spending cuts and spending limitations in the future. right now, what i m understanding is that the staffs have been working together and there are a few things where there is some common ground. there s certainly common ground to you claw back unspent covid-9 money that s not going to move the needle. you more than that to make a difference. that is one area of common ground. the other area of common ground is something having to do with permitting, permitting of both fossil fuels as well as permitting of green energy projects. so that is also something that will likely materialize here. the other issue that there seems to be some pushback on are work requirements for employees and spending caps for the coming years.
here, expected to talk about something else, it was this g-7 dominated by stories outside of what they wanted to talk about especially that debt ceiling impasse. the president wanted to talk about his clean energy action plan, he wanted to talk about energy security for g-7 nations. instead, in just his 12th solo news conference at as president be he fielded questions about why he can t come to a debt ceiling agreement. first, we weren t making progress. then we made a lot of progress, then all of a sudden came back with a proposal that was very cut back from where they d agreed or discussed. we gave a counter proposal to the counter, again, i know this sounds ridiculous but that s what we did and i m waiting to hear their response to what we offered. we re willing to cut spending. reporter: in a statement white house press secretary says the proposal mccarthy submitted was a big step backwards with demands could nt pass the senate.
