Thanks to the efforts of Jeffrey Hayes, the state of California has earmarked $195,000 to rebuild a statue that was destroyed years ago. “The Black Family” will once again grace Neal Petties Mountain View Park.
Neal Petties was a neighborhood hero and his neighbors were gathered at a San Diego Parks and Recreation Board meeting this month to urge that their century-old neighborhood park be renamed to honor him.
Dozens gathered Monday afternoon at the World Beat Center in Balboa Park to honor Neal Petties, who worked to bring opportunities and culture to Black families.
