Neal Benezra, the longtime director of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) announced today that its director for nearly two decades, Neal Benezra, is stepping down. The museum said that Benezra would assist in the search for his replacement and would lead the museum until that leader is found.
Benezra faced criticism last May after the museum deleted an Instagram comment by a former Black museum staff member, Taylor Brandon, who raised objections to an SFMOMA post on that social media channel regarding a work by the artist Glenn Ligon. Brandon had accused the museum of “using Black pain for their own financial gain” by posting a work by the artist.

Abigail DeVille will chat on Zoom with Edward Berenson, a Statue of Liberty expert, about her new exhibition “Light of Freedom,” on view through January 31, 2021. It’s inspired by Lady Liberty’s arm and torch, which were displayed in Madison Square Park from 1876 to 1882, as part of the effort to fundraise for the massive sculpture’s completion. DeVille invites audiences to reconsider this symbol of American freedom through the lens of African American history, from the first slaves brought to New Amsterdam in 1626 through to the present-day Black Lives Matter movement.
