Pangasinan coastal town positive for red tide toxin

PNA file photo BOLINAO, Pangasinan - The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) regional marine biotoxin laboratory in Ilocos has confirmed that the coastal waters of this town is positive for paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) or red tide toxin. In the shellfish advisory no. 1 issued Thursday night, BFAR Ilocos regional director Rosario Segundina Gaerlan said PSP toxin level in shellfish samples collected from the area has reached 249 g STX per 100 grams shellfish meat. "Thus, to avoid PSP, the public is advised to refrain from eating, gathering or harvesting, transporting, and marketing all types of shellfish and acetes or alamang gathered from coastal water of Bolinao until such time that the shellfish toxicity level has done down below the regulatory limit of 60 g STX/ 100 grams shellfish meat," she said.
