The General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo, who is also Guyana's Vice President, during his recent press conferences has been using these opportunities to forge ahead with his government's campaign to discredit the Guyana Press Association (GPA).
The Guyana Press Association (GPA) on Friday chided Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo for statements he made during his last press conference on Thursday which attacked the Association.
The Declaration of Chapultepec was adopted by the Inter American Press Association at its Hemisphere Conference on Free Speech held in Chapultepec, at Chapultepec Castle, in Mexico City, on 11th March, 1994. It sets out the ten (10) principles which guide and govern freedom of expression and of the press and to which all the governments who observe and practice democracy have committed and signed on to, including the Government of Guyana.
The Government seems to be blaming complaints from the Guyana Press Association (GPA) head Ms. Raghubir for a 26-points drop in ratings on the Global Press Freedom Index. (“Jagdeo blames Press Association for poor global press freedom rating,” DW, 5 May 2023). This is quite a huge drop, very embarrassing, and the VP seems upset as he vented profusely at a Press Conference. Mr. Eusi Kwayana has warned that, “Citizens should take note of Jagdeo’s singling out of the GPA,” (SN, May 16, 2023).
Dear Editor,Former President of the Guyana Press Association (GPA), Mr. Neil Marks, in a Letter to the Editor published in the Stabroek News on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 under the caption – Credibility of the GPA has been severely harmed – sought to discredit this noble body and undermine the credibility of the just concluded elections by peddling blatant lies intended to misinform the populace about the electoral process and the eligibility of members.
