now that s fun. mom, you re awesome. oh yeah! bum ba bum ba bum [ gong ] [ wisest kid ] m m! m m! good! and in pretenders tonight, rnc chair reince priebus, the low-rated talk show host, hue hewitt. in the midst of monday s horrific shooting at the naval yard, reince took some time away from his minority outreach efforts to buy into hewitt s conspiracy theory about president obama and the debt ceiling. this effectively knocks another week off of the media s attention on the domestic paralysis that the president is orchestrating. i think he wants to shut down the government. when we have three weeks of syrian fiasco. now we re going to have rightfully so, a week of serious coverage of this massacre. but i don t think the country realizes, we have a minute to the break, that we re on the
rampage at the washington naval yard. 12 people killed. aaron alexis was killed in a fire fight with police officers. he moved to d.c. recently to work as a civilian subcontractor for hewlett-packard. he was discharged in 2011 over a pattern of misconduct and that a gun incident in 2010 in texas played a role. he was reportedly arrested in seattle after he fired three shots at a car belonging to construction workers. alexis claimed he had a black out fueled by anger after being mocked by workers happen detectives were sold by his father saying he had anger management problems and alexis helped out with rescue attempts during the september 11th attacks. others who knew him in texas said he was a peaceful and
inside one of the buildings. not just any building. it was the same one where a gunman opened fire in september 2013. aaron alexis shot and killed 12 people in that attack. police say after scouring the scene they found nothing. at this time there is no evidence of gunshots. there is no evidence of a shooter and there is no evidence of any victims today. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge is live at the naval yard for us. catherine what did we learn in this news conference? reporter: sandra, thanks. look we learned a lot of the details about how all of this went down. at about 7:29:00 eastern time they got the first 911 call from the employee at navy yard about possible shots fired. what happened with d.c. police and federal authorities is that they began immediately treating this as an active shooter situation. we had that heavy press presence deployed and significantly they
also utilized something called the national capital response quad. in response squad. this kicks into gear when there is perceived terrorism or terrorism threat. there was not an active shot here and there were no injuries and they interviewed the person who placed 911 call. at this point they re satisfied it was not a hoax and there was no malicious intent here sandra. did the fact that we re heading into the 4th of july weekend made a difference in all this. reporter: clearly that is the subtext here. what the d.c. police chief, cathy lanier told reporters that the response we saw in washington was kind of response they would have any kind of report of active shooter down at the navy yard. reality according to my contacts we re in one of the most severe threat environments leading up to the july 4th holiday we ve seen in the better part of a decade. a lot of that chatter they re
centers of navy activity. won in norfolk and one in san diego. it s not on the largest navy base in the country, but the largest in the world. it covers 6,000 acres and 60,000 military and $civilian personnel assigned to the base. activity at the base have returned to normal as law enforcement tries to determine what happened and why. martha: the scene in norfolk is eerily similar to a tragedy at the washington naval yard. 12 people were killed when a former civilian contractor walked into the navy yard with a shotgun and opened fire. police eventually shot and killed the gunman. the suspect s name, aaron
