While people around the world will recognize Earth Day on Thursday, Apr. 22, in ways big and small, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is taking the opportunity to highlight yet another reason to celebrate: the department’s centennial anniversary. The DNR’s forerunner, the Department of Conservation, was established in 1921 (March 30, 1921, to be exact).

Earth Day 2021: Pandemic cuts down on paper at local schools There’s another reason for celebration this Earth Day: Schools are saving trees. More electronic devices in the hands of students translates to less paper at area schools. In some cases, that reduction has been even greater since the pandemic began. Bedford Public Schools, Airport Community Schools and St. Mary Catholic Central High School are among the local schools that are reporting a paper reduction. Bedford Bedford Public Schools, like other school districts, purchases paper literally by the truckload. Each load is 840 cases. Administrators are finding they are making these purchases less frequently.
