First sea turtle nest of the season reported at Pensacola Beach

The nest was reported one day after biologists at Gulf Islands National Seashore identified two loggerhead nests at the national park, one in the Fort Pickens Area and one in the Perdido Key Area. The Pensacola area provides ideal conditions for sea turtle nesting each year between May and October. Several species make their nests in the area including the loggerhead and green sea turtles, as well as the rarer Kemp s ridley and leatherback. Loggerheads are the most common and account for more than 90% of the nests laid each year. Once laid, the eggs incubate for about 60 days before hatchlings emerge under the cover of darkness and make their way to the Gulf of Mexico.
