The human coronavirus was identified more than 50 years ago, and its threat recognized with the SARS outbreak of 2002. But despite scientific warnings of an inevitable pandemic, Canadian governments were unprepared for the havoc it has caused.
Are we going to repeat that mistake with climate change?
In its 2019 report on climate change, the federal government said Canada has warmed at a rate twice the global average and will continue on that trajectory. The result, it said, will be: more extreme rainfall that causes flooding of homes and businesses; more intense heat waves that worsen droughts and forest fires; and permafrost thaw that will undermine northern infrastructure.
