In early May 2024, residents of Daisen, a coastal town in Japan s Tottori Prefecture, witnessed a stunning display of vertical light pillars stretching into the night sky. Initially sparking rumors of an alien invasion, the phenomenon was identified as "Isaribi Kochu." This natural occurrence happens when fishermen use bright lights, called "isaribi," to attract fish at night. Under specific conditions involving ice crystals in the atmosphere, these lights reflect to create the vertical pillars.
