Presentation of an agreement to restore the Alzette

On Thursday, 30 March, Minister of Finance, Yuriko Backes, Minister for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development, Joëlle Welfring, and Vice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB), Kris Peeters, presented a financing agreement between Luxembourg and the EIB to fund the ecological restoration of the Alzette river and its tributary, the Pétrusse.

France: EIB and Eau de Paris commit to protecting biodiversity and ecosystems in Île-de-France

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is supporting the biodiversity strategy of Eau de Paris, the City of Paris municipal water authority, with a loan of €3.75 million under the Natural Capital Financing Facility to implement measures to restore river connectivity and various programmes to enhance biodiversity. Technical assistance will also be provided alongside the financing. This new loan follows the signing of a €130 million loan last July between the EIB and Eau de Paris to finance the authority’s 2021-2026 investment plan.

Belgium: EIB and SPGE commit to protecting water resources, biodiversity and ecosystems in the Walloon Region – Focus: How improving the treatment of wastewater supports the return of the freshwater pearl mussel

This is the first operation in Belgium under the Natural Capital Financing Facility created by the EIB and the European Commission. The operation is part of a €150 million finance contract signed in spring 2020 by the EIB for SPGE, supporting its environmentally friendly wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure modernisation programme.
