principle of his political party, whatever you want to call it. trumpism begins with immigration, the wall, and a sense of populist nativeism and that s where things become troubling. because in europe, ethnicity and nativeism got this continent in a lot of trouble. they fought wars for generations and generations over issues of people crossing over into other people s lands, and they thought this was a resolved question. they thought that the european union and the post cold war world is one where national borders are protected by our militaries but the specific movement of peoples is now free, and that has become a problem, and i think we need to remember how that started, and that started because our previous president made a decision to not involve the united states in syria.

stutts and bob herbert. i don t know where to begin with trump s feechspeech but the people he s appealing to the voters he s appealing to. seems he s stumbling on something sitting in front of republicans for a long time now. it s not just it s the nativeism, he s getting the anti-immigration core of the party but listen to what he had to say about health care i know we have to talk with everybody. one of the things republican parties had a lot of success is support with white working class voters. trump is getting this sort of economic populous marrying nativeism with economic nationalism. i think back to pat buchanan used to do this and got far with it 20 years ago. pat buchanan was an intelligent guy and there was some thought behind his positions. he wasn t talking about former girl friends. this guy is free associating. whatever comes off the top of
the far right excessive rhetoric. he doesn t say what they say but he says barack obama doesn t understand the uniqueness of america. he doesn t understand the american experiment. so he s out there sort of doing a more light version of this idea that there s something foreign or there s an other quality to barack obama, it s been part of his campaign from the get-go and he doesn t seem to be moving away from it, even as he tries to court independent voters now. well, that s a question, chris sill us today, can he keep getting away with this i m the american home team? i m america s team? this guy is not quite on the team of americans, without the press saying, wait a minute, objectively speaking you re playing to the worst elements in american society when you try to get in to this nativeism, this sense that people are crooks if they don t agree with you politically, or they re traitors, even? well, let me let me preface this by saying this will be an unpopular opinion with you
