April has once again been officially recognized as Native Plant Month here in Ohio, and since I’d already discussed some of our spring wildflowers, I thought I’d focus on a group of native plants that is often overshadowed by its gaudier flowering kin – ferns.
Ferns are an incredibly diverse group of plants that may lack the colorful blooms of woodland and field wildflowers but still possess an inherent beauty that can really be appreciated when taking a closer look at their leaf-like structures, called fronds.
The fronds of different fern species can vary significantly in length, shape and complexity and are often one of the key characteristics used to help identify them. Similar to how we classify tree leaves into categories, fern fronds can also be sorted into several broad types based on their growth patterns.
