The snowfall Monday morning might have been a little underwhelming in the Pittsburgh area, but it was just the appetizer for a week of tumultuous precipitation.
Early estimates show the Pittsburgh and Beaver County areas saw between 1 and 2 inches of snowfall, said Jenna Lake, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Moon Township. But there s a much more devious weather system on its way, Lake said.
Ice.
Meteorologists are expecting freezing rain Monday evening followed by another light snowstorm front. Lake said several hours of freezing rain will result in between a tenth and a quarter inch of ice on the roads.

It may look like a winter wonderland outside, but officials say beware of icy roads.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday in Beaver, Lawrence and Allegheny counties, according to a report from the National Weather Service in Moon Township. The advisory began around 11:30 a.m. Monday, with an additional accumulation of 1 to 3 inches of snow expected, though some areas should prepare for more.

While a snow band racked up an inch or two in the Pittsburgh area by early afternoon and up to four inches on the ridges, the region is forecast to be done with any substantial snowfall this weekend.
Expect the same old winter gray days for Saturday afternoon into Sunday where some light snow, or rain depending on where you are is possible, said Michael Brown, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Moon Township.
Consider Thursday’s mild temperatures the calm before the storm.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for much of Western Pennsylvania with a forecast of snow and plunging temperatures.
The advisory runs from 7 p.m. through 1 p.m. Friday and calls for temperatures to drop from today’s high of 52 to 20 degrees overnight.
“As soon as the front moves through the area this afternoon, we’ll start to get the cold air rushing in and experience a pretty significant drop in the temperature starting at about 5 p.m.,” said David Shallenberger, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Moon.
