Full Moon 2021: Science Explains Why People Sleep Less During This Lunar Event
KEY POINTS
People get less sleep during full-moon nights
The waning moon does not affect a person s sleep pattern in the nights following the full moon
A group of researchers found that people living in both rural and urban environments have difficulties sleeping on time on the nights leading up to the full moon.
A new study published in January on the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances showed that the moon cycle is directly related to the time and amount of sleep a person gets. Because full moons provide more light at night, human activities tend to extend beyond definded hours causing them to sleep late and less.

Researchers find that whether you live in a rural or urban environment, your sleep patterns are affected by the full moon. On the nights leading up to full moon, people fall asleep later and sleep less overall.
Full moon is coming up this weekend, and, as you might know, superstitions about full moons abound. Many lunar effects have been debunked, but some are still being studied. A new study published in late January, 2021 at the peer-reviewed journal
Science Advances now shows a correlation between the moon cycle and the amount of sleep you’re getting. In other words – if it feels like you’re going to bed later, and sleeping less overall, around the time of full moon – this study has your back.

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 19 2021 (IPS) - The forest is the main resource in the Chaco, a vast plain shared by Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay. And how to use it sustainably is the most difficult question. Two recently inaugurated power plants fired by forest biomass provide a possible answer, although they are not free of controversy.
On Nights Before a Full Moon, People Go to Bed. On Nights Before a Full Moon, People Go to Bed Later and Sleep Less, Study Shows
For centuries, humans have blamed the moon for our moods, accidents and even natural disasters. But new research indicates that our planet’s celestial companion impacts something else entirely our sleep.
In a paper published Jan. 27 in Science Advances, scientists at the University of Washington, the National University of Quilmes in Argentina and Yale University report that sleep cycles in people oscillate during the 29.5-day lunar cycle: In the days leading up to a full moon, people go to sleep later in the evening and sleep for shorter periods of time. The research team, led by UW professor of biology Horacio de la Iglesia, observed these variations in both the time of sleep onset and the duration of sleep in urban and rural settings from Indigenous communities in northern Argentina to college students in Seattle, a city of more than 750,00

New research this week suggests the moon may be influencing our behaviour in a small, but significant way. Far from the usual soporific effect, the days ahead of a full moon may stimulate us to stay awake later.(CBC/Radio-Canada)
