January is National Train Your Dog month.
The San Diego Humane Society wants to remind pet owners it offers many free and low-cost behavior training resources for pets. A lot of classes are available on Zoom.
News 8 decided to put some training tips to the test.
News 8 s Kelly Hessedal is eight months pregnant. Hessedal and her husband are expecting their first child in March 2021. Their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bella, may need some help adjusting to no longer being the only baby in their family.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - If you received a furry friend as a gift during the holidays, now is a good time to start training it as January is National Train Your Dog Month.
“I think this is a good time of the year for people to really be conscientious about training their puppies especially after.normally puppies are given at the holidays,” said Alison Patrolia, CVT, SDC, Licensed Family Paws Parent Educator.
Folks over at Animal Medical Center in Hattiesburg offer obedience and behavioral training.
More than thirty years ago, the American Kennel Club launched the Canine Good Citizen Program, to encourage and support owners with dogs that have good manners both at home and in the community. It is really a two-part program, stressing responsible pet ownership for people and basic good manners for their dogs.
In order to become a Canine Good Citizen, a well-behaved dog should respond to seven basic commands – “sit”, “down”, “stay”, “come”, “heel”, “off” and “no”. These essential commands will do more than just ensure your companion is a good citizen – they can help to keep your pet out of dangerous situations. For example, it could enable you (using only your voice) to stop your pet from running out in front of a car while chasing a ball.
