Parents i told them that if you do not send your daughters to school, then the enemy wins. I told them not to give into darkness. In so many ways, in so many ways, the afghan people, and especially afghan women and girls have fought back against that darkness. We mentioned earlier that 8. 3 million young people are in school today and nearly 40 are girls. Women and girls who have gained access to health care do not want to see a return to high mortality rates. The young women who fought for their education and health now want jobs that utilize their skills and will allow them to contribute to afghan society. One example of that is a woman i met a couple of years ago, an entrepreneurial woman from western afghanistan. I came to know her over the past several years just because she traveled to the United States, but because she came to northeastern pennsylvania where i live. She met with folks in a lot of different places, including northeastern pennsylvania. To say that people have been
Introduction. I am honored to be back here. I am grateful to have this chance to talk about this topic which has dominated our discussions here in washington for more than a decade. I am grateful for the opportunity to be back here. When you get invited summer to speak, if you get invited back that is a good thing. I am grateful. I want to thank the centers for American Progress for the work that you do. Often in the congress we have exposure to a lot of data, a lot of information, a lot of hearings and briefings. But sometimes you do not have the policy work in front of you that you would hope sometimes. Centers for American Progress has been a great value to me and i know two other senators. To other senators. I want to thank you for agreeing to moderate our conversation today, caroline. I know we will get to that later and we will certainly take questions from the audience. I am grateful, in addition to the folks in the audience who actually work at cap, to say hello to those of us
Commitment to Law Enforcement, your commitment and support by people you worked with, which means the world to me that cops like you. You are willing to do the tough work of taking tough cases to trial and representing the u. S. In cases that maybe other people avoid. I appreciated hearing that history about you. I appreciate having the chance to meet with you. Hopefully, if everything comes to fruition the way we think it will, i look forward to the opportunity of bringing you to north dakota and introducing you to the unique challenges we have in the northern border. I dont think i guess i have to decide this morning whether we will have the discussion i thought we were going to have. I think it will hopefully help clear some things up and give you a chance to respond. It is hard, from a witnesss standpoint, from your standpoint, to have an opportunity to respond to what can be a frustrating situation for you and your family. Im going to jump right in. In this situation with Funds Ma
Here. And the real problem is donald trump is not the closer. He cant call these people up and say, hey, ive done so much for you, you need to vote for this for me. This is not going to sway senate republicans. Darlene, a lot of the opposition in the bill isnt something that the sweeteners will necessarily be able to fix. A lit more money here or there to alaska or maine. The critique is more fundamental from Susan Collins. So how does senator graham and cassidy get over the hurdle . Thats a good question. You mentioned Susan Collins and rand paul who is always for repeal and his opposition to this bill now is based on the fact that it does not entirely repeal obamacare. So i dont know how you flip him on that basis. And can President Trump close the deal . That remains to be seen. This is one of several headlines moving forward throughout the day here. What is happening on the health with health, happening on the

Hillary clinton is up 15 points among women, donald trump up 11 points among men so you add it altogether and it shows that Hillary Clinton is up three points over donald trump. It was five points last week. So a little bit of tightening. Jose, i think one of the theories thats going on here is as donald trump has become presumptive nominee, more and more republicans are getting on board. It will be interesting to see if hillary also seems to solidify some of her poll numbers once the democratic race is concluded. Mark, if we look at those numbers once again, 84 Hillary Clinton in the africanamerican community, plus 60 latinos for Hillary Clinton. Is there any scenario that trump could actually succeed with those numbers, if those numbers remain steady . Look at that. Jose, given my knowledge of politics covering the 2004 cycle where george w. Bush overperformed with latinos, 2008, 2012, demographics mean so much. Many republicans after their losses in 2012 said, hey, we need to start
