we going to get trump the guy who has appointed general james mattis to be his secretary of defense, mike pompeo his cia director and things of that nature. then i think we have to look at his behavior. i think what s so unsettling for many but just he leaves a lot of us guessing is donald trump when it comes to matters of foreign policy, national security isn t necessarily rooted in particular principles that we can depend on, whether we would like them or not. so he keeps a lot of people guessing in terms of his end game. if we re looking at china and we re looking at the pacific the fact that he s ruffling some feathers there and putting a lot of priorities for china on the table for negotiation could work out well. china has been building these islands in the south china sea, they ve been trying to exert and expand their influence at the expense of the united states and i think this is where barack obama the president has fallen short. so if the president elect understands what his
friends in u.s. policy circles, cozy up to academics, meet with some new york fundraisers, that sort of thing. so the actual danger to national security isn t immediately evident from what we know so far. and how much are people taking our lack of understanding and thinking, uh-oh, there may be something more hefty to this. because the russians know what they re doing. all this on the surface seems so benign that how much are people concerned there s actually something underneath here that may be serious? well, i think part of it has to do with the sourcing. the vast majority of what s out there in the press right now comes from a handful of documents that were released called the charging documents. it does go into incredible detail about how the fbi surveilled them and so forth. but it s only limited to the charges that they re charged with. and they re not charged with espionage, charged with wire fraud and acting as agents on foreign government. and the evidence in the
of leaks. here s some audio without pictures because this is an off camera briefing with sean spicer. what has occurred today or the last little while in terms of these leaks is frankly dangerous. the idea that someone who has been given access to information is pushing that information out into the media, undermines our national security and i don t think there s any other way to say it that it is frankly dangerous. we heard the same thing from general h.r. mcmaster when he said that what really is a threat to national security isn t what the president shared with russians but it s in the public domain. so i pressed the national public security adviser said what the nsd is doing to curb such things. what steps are you taking by virtual of discovering this as you did to try to limit the potential for any more leaks of national security information?
