Dec. 12 of every year is National Poinsettia Day, originally made an official U.S. holiday in 2002. It honors the date of Joel Robert Poinsett’s death, who the plant is now named after, and Paul Ecke Jr., who is credited with founding the modern poinsettia industry. Poinsett, the first U.S. Minister to Mexico, in the 1820s sent clippings of the plant back to his home in South Carolina for cultivation.
