David Meyers, M.D. The nursing assistant spoke through tears as she shared her experience.  She was unsure which was worse, the isolation and fear she experienced this spring as her facility went into COVID-19 lock-down, or the anxiety she felt this summer when she worried that members of her community held her  responsible for harming the residents for whom she cared. While all of us have been impacted by COVID-19, the pandemic has been particularly difficult for America’s nursing homes.  Advanced age, underlying frailty, and communal living conditions make nursing home residents especially vulnerable, and their reliance on nursing home staff members put these caregivers at high risk.  COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 125,000 nursing home residents and nearly 1,500 staff.

According to data from the COVID Tracking Project, nursing home residents account for 38% of COVID-19 fatalities nationwide despite only making up less than 1% of the population. The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration health finder website shows 29 nursing homes in Sarasota County, though more might be unlisted. ProPublica’s Nursing Home Inspect website, which “compares nursing homes based on the deficiencies cited by regulators and the penalties imposed in the past three years,” includes 22 facilities in Sarasota County, all of which had moderate to severe deficiencies.

 E-Mail ATLANTA Researchers in Georgia State University s School of Public Health and Emory University s School of Medicine have received a $600,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to help nursing homes implement practices to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 and stop the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The grant allows the public health team from the School of Public Health s Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) to collaborate with researchers from Emory University s School of Medicine and Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program to form Georgia s National Nursing Home COVID-19 Action Network (NNHCAN). Georgia State will be the hub for the Extension Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) model for the NNHCAN project by recruiting nursing homes to take part in program and managing the ECHO training and data platform.
