Im a captain with the alameda sheriffs office, and i had significant roles in urban shield in the last few years. And i just wanted to talk about one component of urban shield. Yell command is an exercise that prepares all of the Emergency Management and manage Operation Center staff for any kind of disaster, whether its man made or natural. And the whole purpose is to create an event that tests our regional capablities. And weve had these tests since 2013, and each year, we test a certain event. This last year, we tested our community or our availability to distribute our commodities in an event of an earthquake, and these are the types of things that yellow command prepares all of our regions and our Emergency Management centers to respond to. They had a seven mile radius to search with the cell phone towers. The officer asked for melissas ipad to find her phone and in three guesses he cracked the code. I made an educated guess based on a series of common numbers that people use for passwords. Reporter then he turned on the find my iphone app and the problem was solved. Officers looking for melissa had a location to search on the 14,000 block of Mount Hamilton road. But the time to make the discovery work was running short. I noticed she only had 12 battery left in her phone. Reporter cameron took a screen grab and sent it to the field crews who eventually found melissa and her car down a ravine 500 feet off the road. All within 30 minutes of figuring out four digits. 16 years ago, that wouldnt have happened. It would have been phone calls, and guesses, and, maps.
