Taxpayers are paying to rent two of the seven properties in the portfolio of National MP Christopher Luxon, who is among more than a dozen MPs that use Parliamentary accommodation allowances to effectively rent property from themselves. MPs from outside the Wellington region are allowed to claim a capped accommodation allowance to cover their living costs in the city. Most use it to rent flats or hotel rooms, but more than a dozen MPs purchase Wellington accommodation and claim the allowance – effectively renting their Wellington accommodation from themselves.

OPINION:
National MP Christopher Luxon s maiden speech – or rather the social media street parade he promoted it by – was instructive. Most MPs posted a simple video of their maiden speech. Luxon put up numerous posts before and after the event, including paying for Facebook posts of excerpts to be pushed out.
It was akin to the promotion that goes around a leader s State of the Nation speech.
Despite his bluster about learning to find his way around, it has gone some way to addressing the big question around Luxon s ambitions: whether he is thinking about tilting at the top job in his first term.

Transport Minister Michael Wood has hinted that heavyweight trucks may only be able to cross Auckland s ageing Harbour Bridge at restricted times of day.
It comes after Waka Kotahi revealed it s not possible to do any more strengthening work on the bridge due to the weight of the steel that would need to be added.
