Erie-area marine sanctuary application to remain active through 2026

Erie County s effort to have the waters of Lake Erie classified as a national marine sanctuary will stay under federal consideration for another five years. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has agreed to keep the county s proposal in its inventory of sites to be considered for the formal designation, through at least 2026, Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper s office said Thursday. Local officials first sought the designation in 2016. It would protect 76.6 miles of shoreline, 759 square miles of the lake s central basin and more than 100 shipwreck sites.  Applicants, however, are required to resubmit their proposals after five years have elapsed, which local officials have done.
