Under fire - Fusion s Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre BOSSES have come under fire for failing to re-open Southend leisure centres immediately after lockdown, despite a £1.5million bail out. Councillors called on Fusion Leisure’s contract to be reconsidered after only one swimming pool opened immediately following lockdown. Residents also continued to be charged, with the issue was raised at place scrutiny meeting on Monday. Leisure centres have now re-opened, but councillors insisted this should have happened immediately. Conservative group leader, Tony Cox, said: “No other private company has been bailed out to the significant tunes that fusion has during this pandemic with public money.

A third of council-run leisure centres in England are facing permanent closure, according to a new survey.
Up to 117 centres could run out of money within months - and of those that can stay open, nearly 80% say they will have to cut services.
The District Councils Network - which represents 180 authorities - says £325m is urgently needed to save the sector.
The government says it has pumped unprecedented amounts into sports and leisure during the pandemic.
