Clarice Beckett was nearly lost to Australian art history. The highly acclaimed modernist painter died suddenly in 1935, aged 48, when âher memory was extinguished like a candle, overnight, just gone,â according to Tracey Lock, curator at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
âHer works are spellbindingly beautiful, very tranquil but they have a very strong emotional impact that people can never really walk away from. Her works have been described as âaching with feelingâ.â
