SAFY holds chalk art contest

SOUTH BEND — Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY) presents a sidewalk chalk art contest as part of National Foster Care Awareness Month during this month’s First Fridays event in downtown South Bend. First Fridays takes place from 5 to 9 p.m. and also includes South Bend Civic Theatre’s Fringe Festival, a Studebaker car show, a Friends of the Library Book Sale, Guided Walking Architectural Tours of South Bend and other events. During the day, local artists will create chalk art, and during the evening, community members may contribute their creations. The first 250 people who stop by the SAFY table will receive blue ribbon stickers.

A local mom is sharing her story on why she decided to become one. Lynette Johnson is a Colorado Springs foster mom who has looked after two kids so far. Johnson is a pediatric nurse and says for most of her career she s interacted with kids who have special needs. Now she says two teens with special needs call her mom, and she loves it!
