Consultant-led service gets further away as NCHDs increase in numbers
The increase in the overall numbers of non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) is moving the Health Service Executive further away from the policy of a consultant-delivered service, according to the latest national medical workforce report.
The growth in NCHD numbers is happening faster than the rate of additional consultant posts being phased into hospitals.
The Medical Workforce report 2020-21 from the National Doctors Training & Planning (NDTP) division of the HSE highlighted the fact that while Ireland had the lowest ratio of consultants per 100,000 of the population, in terms of international comparison, it had the highest ratio of NCHDs.
