Over 30 years after a U.S.-led international military coalition expelled occupying Iraqi troops from Kuwait, planners have broken ground on the long-simmering plans for a Gulf War memorial.
The U.S.-led mission to expel Iraqi invaders from Kuwait began on Jan. 17, 1991, with a massive aerial and naval bombardment that lasted five weeks. It was followed by a massive ground assault into Iraq and Kuwait that lasted 100 hours until Iraq capitulated.
Veterans and other dignitaries are set to convene at 9 a.m. Region time July 14 to turn the first spades of dirt at what will become the National Desert Storm
Kuwait announced it would provide additional financial support to complete the construction of the National Desert Storm and Desert Shield Memorial on D.C.’s National Mall.
