Residents were evacuated from a senior living center in National City Thursday morning after smoke was seen coming from a residential unit, authorities said.
Authorities received reports of smoke and a loud bang just before 11:30 a.m. at the Paradise Village Retirement Community on East Fourth Street and Harbison Avenue, National City Fire-Rescue battalion Chief Robert Hernandez said.
Fire personnel and police responded to the scene, where staff at the retirement community had evacuated residents from the building. They were taken to a nearby restaurant.
National City police called the Sheriff’s Department’s Bomb/Arson unit to investigate, Hernandez said. Investigators were still at the scene Thursday evening.

A natural gas leak prompted the evacuation of about 75 homes and a shopping center for nearly nine hours Tuesday in National City, officials said.
Authorities also evacuated a nearby elementary school that was about to let out for the day, rerouting parents to a different location to pick up their children, according to Frank Parra, chief of emergency services with the National City Fire Department.
The leak began about 10:30 a.m. and continued until San Diego Gas & Electric crews were able to shut off the line a little after 7 p.m., Parra said. No injuries from the leak were reported.
“I’m even surprised about the line and how early they showed up, said Richard Luna, a Sweetwater High School senior. I was like, ‘Wow, I should’ve come earlier’.”
Luna and hundreds of other students were required to bring signed parent-consent forms in order to receive a vaccine. Many said they wanted to get vaccinated to protect their family members, return to in-person learning and help slow the spread of the virus.
“A lot of college and universities require you to get vaccinated in order for you to return on campus and stuff like that, so I felt the need to get vaccinated myself so I can have the option to return if I wanted to,” said Sebastian Mendivil, another senior.
