Show Transcript BRANDI: A MAJOR EFFORT IS UNDERWAY IN CALAVERAS COUNTY TO GET MORE BOOKS INTO THE HANDS OF CHILDREN IN UNDERSERVED AREAS. A GRANT BY THE STATE LIBRARY IS MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO BRING THE FIRST EVER BOOKMOBILE TO THE COUNTY THIS SUMMER. DIVERSE BOOKS, LITERACY PROGRAMS, AND SERVICES WILL BE BROUGHT TO RURAL AREAS THAT DON’T HAVE LIBRARIES DURING THE PANDEMIC, LIBRARIES HAVE BEEN BUSIER THAN EVER TRYING TO KEEP CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ENGAGED BY READING. THE CALAVERAS COUNTY LIBARIAN SAYS EVERY COMMUNITY SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO GOOD BOOKS. WE ARE REALLY VERY INTENTIONALLY TRYING TO EXPOSE OUR CHILDREN TO AS MUCH DIVERSITY AS WE CAN. is National Bookmobile Day! Enjoying books isn’t just about brick and mortar buildings, bookmobiles bring the magic of books
to the masses! This holiday celebrates the dedicated professionals and volunteers who provide this essential service to their communities every day – on wheels! Sometimes, these ‘libraries on wheels’ are the only ways that books can get into the hands of the kids who need them.
Bookmobiles aren’t exactly a new idea. There have been reports of small mobile libraries in 19th-century England, but in the United States, we have librarian

Started by the Washington County Free Library, the first “bookwagon” hit the road in Hagerstown, Maryland. “No better method has ever been devised for reaching the dweller in the country,” Mary insisted. “The book goes to the man, not waiting for the man to come to the book.”
