Ghana-Press-Review January 14, 2021 to 10:43 579 APA – Accra (Ghana) The kick-off of the election petition hearing at the Supreme Court of Ghana and the move by the leadership of Parliament to resolve some outstanding issues in the House before resumption on Friday are some of the trending stories in the Ghanaian press on Thursday.
The Graphic reports that Ghana will, from today, witness the adjudication of the presidential election petition to determine whether or not President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the validly elected President of the Republic.
It is challenging the declaration of President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential election and is the second presidential election petition in the history of the country, after the first one in 2012.

The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has called on the Speaker of Parliament, Mr. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, to lead the process for collaboration and consensus building among members of Parliament (MPs) to enhance the business of the House.
While condemning the chaotic scenes which characterised the election of the Speaker for the eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic last week, the association stressed the need for MPs to “bury their partisan differences” and work together in the interest of the nation.

The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has called for a review of Article 244 (2) of the 1992 Constitution to allow for the election of presiding members for district assemblies by simple majority.
According to the association, the current nature of the law, which requires a nominee to attain two-thirds of the votes of the membership of the entire assembly, undermined the election process and made it difficult for nominees to meet the requirement.

The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), has called on the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to go through the legal process to seek redress to what the party describes as electoral fraud.
Seeking legal redress at the Supreme Court, it said, was the only reliable path to seek redress if there were evidence of such electoral fraud.
“We have no doubt that given his democratic credentials, former President John Dramani Mahama will not depart from the necessary constitutional arrangements,” it stated.

The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has advised former President John Dramani Mahama to resort to the judicial system to seek redress if there is evidence of electoral fraud in the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
According to NALAG they are fully aware of the position adopted by the former President not to accept the outcome of the Presidential election as announced by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
“We do not doubt that given his democratic credentials he would not depart from the constitutional arrangements”.
