Spread the love (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Legislative aides under the auspices of the “Concerned National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum” on Tuesday protested at the lobby of the National Assembly over unpaid salary arrears. The aides stormed the lobby of the National Assembly carrying placards with various inscriptions. They accused the Clerk to the National Assembly, Arc Olatunde Ojo, of failure to pay their salary arrears, implement Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS), minimum wage, Duty Tour Allowances (DTA), lack of training and Conditions of Service. There was however drama when they sighted Speaker Femi Gbajabimila, who was on his way to the Chamber.

The National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum (NASSlAF) has suspended its planned protest over nonpayment of salary areas. NASSLAF said this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday. It said that the suspension followed assurances by the management of the National Assembly that the arrears will be paid before the end of 2020. ” We will not hesitate to take up the gauntlet if the arrears are not paid on or before Dec. 21, as promised by the management. “We want to specifically appreciate the efforts of the Director of State Services at the National Assembly. “His maturity, uncommon disposition, and his assurance are largely responsible for the suspension of the planned protest,” it said.

Legislative aides issue 48-hour ultimatum over unpaid 2019 salaries Leke Baiyewu, Abuja Legislative aides to members of the National Assembly have written to the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; Chairman, National Assembly Service Commission, Ahmed Amshi; and Clerk to the National Assembly, Amos Ojo, to protest against unpaid salaries. The aides, under the auspices of the National Assembly Legislative Aides Forum, in a letter dated December 13, 2020, also issued a 48-hour ultimatum, from Monday, to the management to clear the backlog of unpaid salaries, failing which they would picket the premises. The letter titled, ‘Continued Refusal to Pay Ninth Assembly Aides Salary Arrears,’ was copied to the Chairman, House Services (Senate and House); Sergeant-at-Arms, National Assembly; Divisional Police Officer, National Assembly Division; and the Department of State Services, National Assembly Division.

Share Legislative aides in the National Assembly have said they will begin a peaceful protest within the premises of the National Assembly from December 16, urging the National Assembly management to avert the planned protest by responding appropriately their demands for salary arrears. Tribune Online sighted a copy of the letter to the Clerk of the National Assembly dated December 13, 2020 in which the group is demanding immediate payment of their 2019 salaries and allowances. Signatories to the correspondence verified by the Tribune Online are Tony Omali for North Central, Zebis Kekung, South South and Chinedu Nwokeukwu. The letter signed by six representatives of the group by their regional representation reads in part: “On the strength of the above, we are by this letter issuing a 48 hours’ notice of our intention to commence on series of actions to drive home our demands for the payment of our 2019 salary arrears.
