Recreational marijuana is now legal for adults in New York, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of testing for the drug in the workplace, experts said.
Although there is nothing in the law that bars companies from testing existing employees or job applicants for marijuana, the statute tweaked New York’s labor law to prevent companies from disciplining workers or not hiring applicants for using pot on their own time.

CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - The union representing Ogdensburg firefighters has lost a bid to restore laid-off members to their jobs.
A state Supreme Court judge denied the request Monday.
The city issued five lay-off notices at the end of 2020, effective with the new year.
However, city officials said last Friday that two more firefighters have opted to retire, and it appears that two more of the laid off firefighters will return to work.

CANTON, N.Y. (WWNY) - A lawyer for Ogdensburg firefighters has asked a judge to restore laid-off firefighters to their jobs.
The city issued five lay-off notices at the end of 2020, effective with the new year. However, city officials said Friday that two more firefighters have opted to retire, and it appears that two more of the laid off firefighters will return to work. Overall firefighting staffing will now be at 20.

OGDENSBURG, N.Y. (WWNY) - A judge wonât stop the layoffs of city firefighters in Ogdensburg, at least for the time being.
In a decision Monday, state Supreme Court Justice Mary Farley granted the Ogdensburg firefightersâ union a hearing on January 8, at which the city could be ordered to not make cuts to the fire department.
But Farley did not grant the unionâs request for a âtemporary restraining order,â which would have blocked the city from making cuts until then.
