Kylie Morris Qualifies for State Track Meet

Brownwood Lady Lion Kylie Morris on Friday finished second in the girls triple jump to advance to the State Track Meet in Austin on May 7-8. Morris, who won the 5-4A/6-4A area championship, jumped 36-11.25 which trailed only Glen Rose’s Kylie Frush (37-0.5). Morris comfortably outdistanced third-place Tania Lee of Burkburnett (35-8-25) as the top two finishers in each event automatically advance to state. The only other event in which finals were held for Brownwood competitors on Friday was the boys triple jump, where Jackson Yoder placed 15 th with a best effort of 39-5. Running preliminaries also took place Friday with Becca Church advancing to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles with the seventh-best time of 16.63. Kynslee Walker also came in seventh in the 400 meters (1:01:03) to reach the finals. Church will run at 3:05 p.m. Saturday and Walker will take the track at 3:50 p.m.

Varsity portion of Bluebonnet Relays to take place Friday

The varsity portion of the Bluebonnet Relays is slated to take place Friday at Gordon Wood Stadium with a format the features essentially two track and field meets in one. The Class 1A-3A schools will begin competing with field events at 9 a.m. and running finals at noon, while the Class 4A-6A schools start their field events at 4 p.m. and running finals at 7 p.m. Due to COVID guidelines established by the UIL, no more than eight teams can compete in a meet which has led to the staggered starts. “We always want to make this as big as we can make it and had this overbooked when the restrictions came out so I had to go with the first eight that committed,” said Lions track and field head coach Andy Howard. “At 9 a.m. Friday we’re going to have our small school division and that’s Early Bangs, Cherokee, Roscoe, San Saba, Eastland, Whitney and Brady coming to that. Trailing by 18 points in the fourth period, the Brownwood Lions shaved the deficit to six but could not complete their comeback as the No. 19 Glen Rose Tigers clinched the District 6-4A boys basketball championship with a 43-35 victory Tuesday on Senior Night at Warren Gym. Brownwood (13-9, 4-3) managed just 14 points over the first three quarters, including going scoreless in the third, but put 21 points on the board in the fourth quarter. “That was about as a bad of a three quarters that we could play offensively,” said Lions fifth-year head coach Nadir Dalleh. “We had 14 points at the third in the our gym and that is awful. It’s not like we didn’t have shots, we had all the shots we could get.”

The Brownwood Lions wrapped up the first half of District 6-4A boys basketball action Tuesday night at Warren Gym with a crucial victory – a 69-56 upset of the No. 25 Lampasas Badgers. “You have to protect your home court in this district and that’s a big win for us,” said Lions fifth-year head coach Nadir Dalleh. Following Tuesday’s results, Brownwood (11-8, 2-2), Lampasas (16-3, 2-2) and Stephenville (14-6, 2-2) currently share second place behind 6-4A front runner and 21st-ranked Glen Rose (20-2, 4-0), which toppled Stephenville, 56-34, in the league’s other game. The Lions were able to overcome 22 turnovers and a 20 of 42 shooting performance from the free throw line as Bryson Monroe led the Lions with 20 points followed by 19 from Christian Kinzler, 11 from Jakob Hataway, nine from Zach Porter, six from Michael Felts and two points apiece from Nathan Wheelington and Luke Moss.
