Review: Greenland focuses on human side of a global disaster

Review: Greenland focuses on human side of a global disaster Gerard Butler stars as a husband and father trying to get his family to safety after a comet wipes out most of humanity In Greenland, a comet from outer space crashes to Earth causing an extinction level event, so it s not quite the holiday pick-me-up as, say, Mariah Carey s Magical Christmas Special.   The best parts of this action epic are the ways in which it scales down and brings its global terror home; in a way, Greenland is a domestic drama in the guise of a disaster movie. It begins with a bang, but a flabby midsection and a few too many unlikely coincidences dull its overall impact.

Greenland movie review & film summary (2020)

Those going into the new Gerard Butler disaster movie epic “Greenland” expecting a cartoonish romp along the lines of his previous foray into the genre, the mind-bogglingly idiotic “Geostorm,” are likely to come away from it surprised. And in some cases, a bit annoyed. Instead of the over-the-top spectacle you might rightfully expect from such a project, the film, at least for a good portion of the time, employs an approach that is slightly more grounded than other films of its type. The result is still pretty dopey in spots, but even if it s not worth watching when all is said and done, it s at least a little better than one might assume it to be.

The First Time With Morena Baccarin

Rolling Stone ‘The First Time’ With Morena Baccarin Firefly star talks  Deadpool Rolling Stone‘s Greenland, the upcoming apocalyptic thriller she co-stars in with Gerard Butler. The film drops on on-demand on December 18th. The film follows John Garrity (Butler), his estranged wife (Baccarin), and their son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) as they try to escape a comet on track to hit Earth and all the trials and tribulations they face along the way. After reading the script, the actress says she felt drawn to her character’s role and the way the film’s backstory differs from a typical disaster film: “I felt like it had a great message and it wasn’t just your typical disaster movie where you have a bunch of scientists trying to figure out how to save the world. You had a family at the core of it that had issues; that were normal, regular people [who] were trying to survive.”

GREENLAND - Review - We Are Movie Geeks

You can count the days on one hand now. Less than a week before the biggest holiday on the calendar, the one that brings families together (most years, now…). Yes, Christmas unites families as does imminent disaster (as the frequent lockdowns of the pandemic have proven). But what if we’re talking about mere hours, rather than these extended quarantine periods? Could you somehow set aside everything (conflicts, distance) to fight the panicked throngs and get your loved ones to a place of somewhat uncertain safety? That’s the challenge facing the Garrity’s in this Earth-shaking (literally) new dramatic thriller. Perhaps their only chance of survival exists across the Atlantic in GREENLAND.

It just sucked me into this world, the 51-year-old Scottish actor told UPI in a recent Zoom interview.
