Against all odds, the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship was completed. Based on the way the tournament went, the odds of the United States winning the whole thing may have been even longer. However, for the fourth time in 11 years, the Americans skated off the ice with the gold medal following one of the more spectacular defensive efforts and goaltending performances the U.S. has ever enjoyed at that level.
Canada looked unbeatable throughout much of the tournament, outscoring opponents 41-4 prior to the gold-medal game, and never once trailing. However, they ran into a hot goaltender and a U.S. squad that was committed to forcing the Canadians to earn every inch of ice.
Ohio State men s ice hockey associate head coach Steve Miller captured a gold medal Tuesday night with Team USA s 2-0 victory over Team Canada in the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. Miller, entering his fourth season with the Buckeyes has now collected two gold medals with Team USA, pairing this one with the gold he captured with Team USA in the 2017 World Junior Championship. As an assistant coach on the staff of head coach Nate Leaman – a Centerville, Ohio native, incidentally – Miller was primarily tasked with putting Team USA s penalty kill packages together. His crew performed well in the gold medal game, holding Canada to zero power play goals.

MVP Trevor Zegras played a key role with a goal and an assist on Alex Turcotte s opener. The Ducks prospect backed up what he said pregame to NHL Network s Jill Savage.
