Ok, it’s not as long as Namibia and plenty of barrels required a doggy door escape, but any wave that can draw a comparison to one of the world’s longest barrels is worth a look.
“I may be over-exaggerating a little bit, it’s just that freaking good,” Nate Florence says after a four-hour session. “As good of conditions as…I’m just tripping right now.”

Following a year off after the pandemic turned normal life upside down, the insane bravery and total carnage that is Red Bull Cape Fear will return in 2021, albeit with a few changes. This year, the normal list of invite-only big wave chargers from around the world heading to Shipstern Bluff will be culled by a single criteria – Australian citizenship, disqualifying 2019 Cape Fear champ Nate Florence before he even reached the elimination round. The list of all-Australian big wave surfers will include an off-tour Mick Fanning, as well as the first women to compete at Shipstern Bluff, a team of chargers that includes former CT-er Laura Enever and up-and-coming ripper Lizzie Stokely.

Despite La Niña, everywhere from Oregon to Hawaii has seen an astounding six-week run of swell. While last weekend was all about Mavs, this Saturday/Sunday appear to be shaping up for some of the best Jaws conditions of the season. With back to back swells like this, even the ‘down’ days have found many logging 6-8 hour sessions. While we wouldn’t normally categorize the brothers Florence as falling into ‘the many’, thankfully here this rings true.

Earlier this winter, I made the unfortunate decision to try and duck dive an outside set at VFW’s in Ocean Beach, San Francisco on an overhead-plus day. It was my first surf on a brand new 6’6”, 35-liter G Money II from Doc Lausch of Surf Prescriptions and I was under the (misguided) impression that I could duck dive anything that came my way on this narrow, knifey vehicle.
