A Newark resident has been arrested this morning at Newark Airport after being criminally charged with shooting and killing a man in Hillside in July, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel and Hillside Police Chief VincentRicciardi jointly announced Tuesday.
Officials said Darrius L. Easterling, 30, is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and second-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes in connection with the death of Steven Zimmerman, 31, of Hillside.
Fire pit accident leaves man dead in N.J., police say

A 56-year-old man died from injuries he suffered in a fire pit accident in Union County, authorities said.
The accident happened shortly before 4 p.m. Monday on Warwick Road in Hillside, according to township police Detective Natalie Ogonowski. Officers arrived at the scene to find the man suffering from burns to his entire body.
“It appears the man added an accelerant to a fire pit and an accident occurred,” Ogonowski said in an email. “He was transported to an area hospital and unfortunately succumbed to his wounds.”

A 56-year-old Union County man died while trying to light a fire pit but instead sparked an explosion that may have killed him, local police said.
Officers arriving at the home on Warwick Road in Hillside found the man with burns covering nearly 75 percent of his body just before 4 p.m. Monday, Hillside Police Det. Natalie Ogonowski said.
The man likely added an unknown accelerant to light the fire pit, causing an explosion, Ogonowki said.
