Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas has dropped over 1,100 warrants for marijuana and prostitution related charges.
The action follows a law passed earlier this month that legalizes recreational marijuana use and possession in the state.
The law won’t take effect until 2022. However, Singas wanted to remove obstacles so people can resume their lives without worry of legal consequences.
Nearly 900 of the cases dropped were related to marijuana possession; 200 involved prostitution charges. A different recent state law repealed loitering violations connected to prostitution.
Suffolk County could soon dismiss over 1,500 marijuana charges.
