A group of health professionals are taking the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority to court after informal discussions over the use of Ivermectin fell flat.

It will now be easier for doctors to prescribe the veterinary drug, Ivermectin, to COVID-19 patients in urgent cases. JOHANNESBURG - Doctors are hoping a high court ruling will make it easier for them to prescribe Ivermectin to patients, in urgent cases.
The high court in Pretoria has ruled that doctors can prescribe the drug, while Section 21 applications are being processed.

A Durban doctor, who pleaded with President Cyril Ramaphosa to legalise Ivermectin to help COVID-19 patients says SAHPRA s controlled access programme for the drug is far too lengthy.

SAHPRA s explained that doctors will have to apply via the Section 21 online submission portal for permission to prescribe the anti-parasitic drug to a single patient.
In urgent cases, doctors may treat their patients but an application is still required.
GP Naseeba Kathrada whose letter to Ramaphosa received the support of over 500 medical professionals, says the authority hasn t taken into account the time spent fighting to save lives.
One of the doctors who wrote to the president, advocating for ivermectin to be used in treating Covid-19 patients, says the guidelines from the regulator are "disappointing".
