The Nao Santa Maria, a replica of the Spanish three-masted ship that was part of Christopher Columbusâ exploration fleet in 1492, is now docked at Mallory Square and available for tours through Sunday, May 23.
The ship is owned by the Nao Victoria Foundation, a non-profit institution specializing in promoting and enhancing cultural events through its historical ships. The 93-foot Nao Santa Maria was built in 2017 to commemorate the Columbusâ journey on its 525th anniversary, when voyagers were able to discover the routes that lead to America for the very first time.
The sailors cast off from their known world on Sept. 6, 1492 and after 36 nerve-racking days, reached a new world on Oct. 12.

Refurbished Pascual Flores due to visit Torrevieja in June
The replica of the Schooner, Pascual Flores, has now had it’s 3 masts refitted by the Nao Victoria Foundation, an organisation that specialises in the restoration of replicas of historical ships The masts had previously been lost due to lack of maintenance, while it was docked as a floating museum in Torrevieja.
The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón together with the Councilor for Culture, José Antonio Quesada, visited the boatyard in Huelva where the refitting is taking place.
The Foundation will receive 750,000 euros over a period of five years for maintaining the ship in exchange for which it will also be used as an “ambassador” of the city’s maritime and salt-mining history visiting ports and mounting exhibitions in Spanish waters and abroad.
One of the ships he sailed with was the Santa Maria.
An exact replica of that ship, named the Nao Santa Maria, was built to celebrate the 525th anniversary of the meeting between two worlds.
That ship arrived in Galveston last night.
The Nao Victoria Foundation builds historical ships and sails them around the world.
Several years ago, they began construction on a full scale replica of the Santa Maria.
You can check out that process HERE.
About a year later, it was done and the Nao Santa Maria currently sails the ocean blue on a mission of education.
I think this is pretty cool.
