NANTUCKET Light pollution on Nantucket has increased by 2.4% each year since 2012, according to data obtained by satellites. So that means there is 22% more light pollution on the island today than just nine years ago.
A group of year-round and seasonal residents has started Nantucket Lights, a new citizen advocacy group, to try to do something about that.
Its mission is to preserve and protect Nantucket s nighttime environment and heritage of dark skies. Members are striving to raise awareness about light pollution there as well as advocating for environmentally responsible outdoor lighting.
One member noted the island is among only a few places on the East Coast that still has the opportunity to make sure the skies stay dark enough.
