The institute was born in the controversy around the exhibit that would be held at the air and space museum at this facility and instituted but was canceled. This was an attempt by the smithsonian and to do an honest and balanced exhibit about the decision to drop the bomb and the consequences of the bombing. This was the 50th anniversary.
