The BJP, which was accused by the Congress of threatening the local Nandini dairy brand by allowing the entry of Amul in Karnataka ahead of the assembly polls earlier this year, is now attempting to turn the tables.
KMF highlighted that there is a shortage of milk storage in the state, and providing better milk purchase prices is crucial to encourage milk producers.
The Karnataka cabinet has announced a Rs 3 per litre rise in the price of Nandini milk from 1 August, citing the needs of milk producers, and falling short against an increasing average national rate. Currently, the lowest-priced milk sold in Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar stated that the hike would enable the government "to give money to the farmers", and bring the price in Karnataka up to a standard closer to that found in other states.
