. right off the top, a local college student shot and killed by a hunter. good evening. i m brian bolter. i m shawn yancy. the man thought a group of students was deer in the brush. roz plater starts us off live from the newsroom tonight. reporter: that tragedy claimed the life of a young winchester woman just weeks away from finishing her degree. she wanted to be an environmentalist. it also left a northern virginia student badly injured. the shooting happened about a mile from the ferrum college campus where several students were collecting frogs for biology class late tuesday afternoon. investigators say a hunter claims he mistook them for deer and opened fire. one round hit jessica gudy in the chest and killed her. she s from winchester, virginia. just last thursday i heard her talking about big plans to go to california. all she wanted to do was research. reporter: it pierce her body and struck herlassmate. it s really sad. very sad situation. reporter: h
